Books on tape…then CD…then online? It was coming.

Ever wonder what the droids who circulate campus with built in brain-iPods (you) will look like when they grow up? The same, except no drowned-out indie music–just books-on-pod. We will be the cutest senior citizen generation to date.

Podiobooks is a web community where podcast authors submit “chapters” to podcast-novels, completing full audio books. The novels’ content stretch across 18 different genres (and yes, there is an erotica section, for the curiously perverse).

Take your relationship with your iPod to the next level and grow old with it.

Well that’s *close* … but I think you have Podiobooks.com mixed up with Librivox sorta.

The free podcast audiobooks at Podiobooks.com are mostly original works with a smattering of ‘classic reads’ thrown in. The idea melds the old notion of ’serialized story telling’ a la Dickens and Thackery and meld it with audiobooks delivered on a podcast feed.

The result is a episode delivered to your computer on a schedule of your choosing .. all at once, one a day, one a week, whatever. These are not “users” submitting chapters but authors who have made their works available for free in this audio format.

Some people like the podcast approach, allowing them to get fresh content daily for commuting or working out. This is particularly useful for folks who have the smaller flash devices that can’t hold a whole book at a time.

Others like to grab the whole book at once so they can choose when to listen to it without having to go back to the well, as it were.

Disclaimer: I’m a Podiobook author. I have a vested interest in providing the best possible free audio books on the web. I hope that in no way diminishes my clarification of the misconceptions in the main article.
