When Dan Machold responded to my email, I didn’t know he was Dan Machold.
SXSW music is almost here, and the number one source to find the greatest finds is Dan’s site, showlistaustin.com. Yeah, we all know.

So who is he? How did he get here? And yes, insanity, he works at UT… as a computer science technician.
I had a Q&A sesh with the man, yet it’s not really a Q&A sesh if you scribble on a notepad with hardly word-for-word technique. This was the best I could deliver:
Machold began the site in 2003, picking up where a man named Mark Grady left off with a printed show list called the “Sound Exchange. ”
Machold: I asked him if I could step on his toes and start online.
The toe-stepping obviously did not end up a problem. Machold described the beginning:
Machold: Emo’s didn’t even have a website. When I first started, it was hard.
It’s not hard anymore. See those ads? The hosting pays for itself at this point, according to Dan. Machold also gets paid in praise emails for his music tastes– he only lists what he finds attractive to the Austin show-goer. This is no free-for-all.
With his chic computer skills, Dan has also been able to make it easier to update–As a matter of fact, he wrote his own Python program just to add shows, with a special template for each club.
Dan’s busiest time of year is guess when: the merry holi-week of SXSW. On average, he gets about 45,000 hits.
P.S. I saw my favorite band at a free after-party because of showlistaustin.com. Therefore, I owe him my life, and some props. His visual identity shall remain my secret… But if ever in the computer science building…
Machold also takes photos, a side I believe he feels a bit more passionate about. That’s as much as I’m telling.
