A Texas free-kick on the left corner of the box sees Stigler come flying out of her goal, only to whiff on the punch, but Keith can’t connect at the far post with the goal at her mercy. Texas’ height is giving OSU problems on set pieces. Another Pfenninger punt into the box leads to another Moore effort on goal, but it’s off-balance and flies well over. That’s 7 Texas shots to OSU’s 2.

Another scramble, this time in the visitors’ box as Goodson and Anderson make their presence felt in trying to get on the end of Stephanie Logterman’s cross. Stigler just beats both strikers to the ball and the danger is cleared.

And OSU is finally heard from, as a throw in deep in the Texas half produces a scramble in the box, but Texas clear at the expense of a header. Goal-scoring midfielder Yolanda Odenyo gets there first but sends the ball well over. OSU so far looks content to sit back counter attack, something Texas has had trouble with in the past.

Texas is putting Oklahoma State under siege right now, without really worrying goalkeeper Erin Stigler. Lucy Keith sends two headers wide from dangerous balls into the box, and Texas is controlling the early goings. A well-time flick from Goodson almost frees Anderson, but under heavy pressure from OSU defenders she rolls her shot wide.

With their first conference winning streak secured, the Longhorns face off against the top scoring team in the nation in the Cowgirls. Texas’ defense has conceded only eight goals all season and they will get a thorough examination from a OSU offense which averages over 3 goals a game.

Texas head coach Chris Petrucelli seems to be tinkering with his lineup yet again, and the mad scientist appears to be using a 4-4-2 formation to start the game, for the first time this season, with All-American defender Kasey Moore starting as a forward for the third game in a row. No matter which way this goes, it should definately be interesting.

The Texas defense gets sloppy and Palmer, again showing her blazing speed, almost breaks away, but freshman sub Kate Nicholson comes out of nowhere to clear the danger. The Longhorns have had more than their share of mental lapses to go with their four goals.

4-0 Texas. Sophomore Kendall Campise scores her first goal of the season after collecting a pass from Goodson on the right side of the box and places a low shot into the far post with her left foot. With half an hour to go, Texas has already matched last season’s 4-0 win in Norman.

Emily Anderson does her best Ronaldinho impression with an elastico on the edge of the box, which for the most part looked to be on purpose, and the ball breaks to Birkhold, who rips a left footed shot from the penalty spot right at Jet, who parries the ball away. Texas kicks off the second half with most of the starters back on the field, although Kasey Moore returns to the backline. How long before Petrucelli calls off the dogs and prepares for Sunday’s clash against OSU remains to be seen.

As the final 10 seconds are counted down, Pfenninger comes out to smother the ball as Sooners’ striker Whitney Palmer closed on goal sandwiched between two Texas defenders. All four players end up on the ground, but the half ends with Texas’ 3-0 lead intact.

3-0 Texas. As substitutes roll of the Texas bench the game is starting to descend into an array of bad passes. But one great one from substitute Stephanie Gibson releases fellow sub Kirsten Birkhold and the freshman makes no mistake, touching the ball into the net for a 3-0 Texas lead. Now it’s just a matter of how many more Texas will score.

Another scare for the OU goal and new goalkeeper Lisa Jet. Goodson sends a cross from the right wing that floats toward the far past and crashes back off the crossbar.

OU has come into the game in the past few minutes and have threatened on the break without really troubling goalkeeper Diana Pfenninger, who has so far been called into action just once.

And right on cue Oklahoma breaks through for what they think is a momentum-turning goal, only to be denied by the assistant referee’s flag, offside.

Texas continues to completely dominate the play. A nice interplay between Moore and Niki Arlitt frees Arlitt on the right wing and her cross is met firmly by Lucy Keith, but the header is blocked by an OU defender.  A slight scare for Texas then as Moore and Katie Corbitt of OU hit heads in challenging for the ball. Both players go down in a heap, but they recover after a few stinging seconds and the game goes on.

A rather tamer version of the Red River Rivalry kicks off tonight as the Longhorns face off against the Sooners at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Texas is looking to continue its 23 game undefeated streak at home, while OU is trying to save face in a nightmare season.  At 1-12-1, Oklahoma sits bottom of the Big 12, a solitary point earned in a surprising 1-1 draw against Kansas last time out that snapped a 10-game losing streak.

The Longhorns, meanwhile, have plenty of catching up to do themselves as they sit 12 points behind conference leaders Colorado, but with three games in hand.

And to the delight of the crowd, the corner is given back to Texas and a yellow card is awarded to A&M’s Amber Gnatzig and Texas’ Kylie Doniak. Dyer ends the drama by catching Gaines’ thrice taken corner.

100 minutes have failed to produce a goal, leaving a final 10 to navigate. The Longhorns are almost in complete control in midfield, but a compact and disciplined defense has stood up just enough to prevent the crucial goal. At the other end, Pfenninger has had to be alert on long passes over the top as the defense pushes up, and she has come flying out of her box on several occasions to clear the danger and scare more then a few Texas fans.

At the other end, Whitney Hooper sends a header wide of Pfenninger’s goal from a dangerous position, but the linesman flag spares her blushes, offside.

Halftime. About what everyone expected with two heavyweights matching up and an early lead in the Big 12 to play for. Goodson’s injury is the biggest story of an uneventful 45 minutes, and she has not reappeared after being helped to the locker room.

The game is getting increasingly physical, but thankfully the ref is happy to let play go on and has called only two fouls so far, both on the Aggies for inexcusable pushes in midfield. Kasey Moore has been back to her defensive best, stepping in front of passes and dominating everything in the air as neither side can carve out a chance in the first 17 minutes.

At the other end, the ‘Horns are moving the ball around on the ground, a nice change from their hopefull punts to start the game against Cal. The Longhorns get corners in quick succession, and Courtney Gaines’ delivery is causing all sorts of problems for the Aggies. Moore sends a looping header over the bar.

The crowd is still filing in to Mike A. Myers Stadium 20 minutes before kick-off, where a near-record crowd is expected tonight. Just how much ACL has to say about that we’ll find out in a couple of hours, but for now, Texas vs. A&M is the big ticket on campus.

Pfenninger easily plucks a corner out of the air as time winds down and the Longhorns escape with the victory. Texas improves its home undefeated streak to 21 and now prepare for the visit of Texas A&M Friday as they enter Big 12 play with a bang.

Texas senior Stephanie Logterman is played through on goal with a chance to put the Longhorns ahead, but Pelligrini stands up tall to deflect the ball wide. Meanwhile, another corner leads to chaos in the Cal box and defender Emily Anderson deflects a flick-on towards goal from six yards, but the ball crashes against the cross bar and comes back out. At the other end, Pfenninger comes up with a huge one-on-one save to prevent Cal from landing a sucker punch with only two minutes left of normal time.

After looking shell-shocked for a few minutes, Cal has recovered and both sides are driving at each other’s defense. Pfenninger is forced to make another save as Alex Morgan flicked a long ball towards goal, while the Longhorns look full of purpose going foward, with Goodson a threat every time she touches the ball.

Texas defender Jill Gilbeau forces a spectacular save from goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini, but from the ensuring corner, freshman striker Courtney Goodson powers a header into the top corner to tie the game. Almost instantly, Texas breaks forward again and Goodson forces a diving save from Pellegrini and the rebound just avoids the streaking Lisberger, who was following up. The Longhorns look to have found an offensive rhythm for the first time this match.

The Longhorns, on the defensive for much of this game, have their best chance of the match, as freshman Lucy Keith connects with a header from five yards out, only to put it over the bar. At the other end, Pfenninger is again called into action as she throws herself at the ball and gets there before the Cal forward as the visitors threatened again.

Cal is starting to dominate on the scoreboard as well as on the pitch, and they have now out shot Texas 8-3. Goalkeeper Pfenninger had to be alert to stop a cross at her near post with Alex hovering in the background. Texas freshman Courtney Goodson answers with a low shot, but it’s easily saved Meanwhile, Texas midfielder Courtney Gaines makes a vital sliding block on the edge of the box as both offenses spring into life.

Both sides return their original starters as the second half gets underway and Texas almost levels immediately as Logterman breaks through on the left side, but her cross into the middle is cleared by a stretching defender. A good start for the home side.

Halftime

The Bears go into half with the lead and no one can argue they don’t deserve it. The Longhorns have looked rather toothless in attack, and ended the half with all four starting forwards looking on from the sidelines as Petrucelli turned to his bench for answers. Texas’ one saving grace has been the chaos they have caused in the the Cal box from Courtney Gaines’ set-pieces, and with Cal racking up 12 fouls, there have been plenty of those.

1-0 Cal. The Bears play a free kick low into the box, and forward Alex Morgan beats Pfenninger with her second attempt to put the visitors ahead. Only the second goal Texas has conceded at home this season.

Both sides trade fouls in dangerous areas. Cal’s Megan Jesolva drives the ball low and just wide of Pfenninger’s far post, while Kasey Moore has her effort blocked out for a Texas corner. Freshman Kylie Doniak shots wide from the corner, as both sides look to open the game up.

Both sides are struggling to control the ball and there are more fouls and punts then chances so far. Cal’s Katie Oakes has looked dangerous with the ball at her feet, and it’s going to be up to the Texas midfield to keep her quiet.

Both sides take the field as the Longhorns host their first ranked opponent of the season. On the back of a 2-1 double overtime win over TCU Friday night, Texas looks to keep its 20-game home unbeaten streak alive.
