Another surging run from Jill Gilbeau frees Courtney Goodson on the left side of the box, but her left footed shot goes just wide. 1 minute left.
9:15
A scrum ensues from a Texas corner and the ref gives A&M a free kick, much to the disgust of head coach Chris Petrucelli, who has to be restrained by the assistant ref as he charges the field. And to the delight of the crowd, the corner is given back to Texas and a yellow card is awarded to A&M’s Amber Gnatzig and Texas’ Kylie Doniak. Dyer ends the drama by catching Gaines’ thrice taken corner.
9:08
Second overtime gets underway.
9:06
100 minutes have failed to produce a goal, leaving a final 10 to navigate. The Longhorns are almost in complete control in midfield, but a compact and disciplined defense has stood up just enough to prevent the crucial goal. At the other end, Pfenninger has had to be alert on long passes over the top as the defense pushes up, and she has come flying out of her box on several occasions to clear the danger and scare more then a few Texas fans.
8:59
The Longhorns have controlled the ball with ease so far, but still no telling ball to unlock the A&M defense.
8:56
Overtime kicks off. Two 10 minute periods.
8:52
Overtime. Neither side is able to put away their half chances, and though the Horns will feel they have had the best of these 90 minutes, they will have to prove it again over the next 20, with the golden goal hanging like a shadow over this match.
8:49
With just 2 minutes left, Goodson has the best chance of the match, played through by Logterman in the right side of the box, but her shot whistles wide of the post. Meanwhile, Gilbeau forces another save from Dyer, who then clutches Gaines’ corner out of the air.
8:43
As the seconds continue to slip away at Myers Stadium, overtime begins to hang over the crowd and players. Texas responds with two shots from Gilbeau and Arlit that brings the crowd to their feet, but go just off target.
8:33
And there is confirmation that Texas Soccer has triumphed over ACL, with 5585 fans in attendance, breaking the eight-year record set against North Carolina.
8:32
Space is starting to open up in midfield as players tire. The Longhorns try to break and get a corner, but Gaines’ delivery is for once lacking, and a foul give A&M a chance to clear.
8:27
Kasey Moore and Courtney Gaines team up to stop an A&M counter attack, and Moore frees Logterman on the left wing with a perfectly weighted pass. The senior responds with a very good cross, but Goodson can’t connect from inside the six yard box and the chance goes begging.
8:24
Both sides look to their benches for inspiration, as chances have dried up in the last 10 minutes. An A&M free kick looks dangerous, but Pfenninger leaves her goal-line confidently to punch clear.
8:16
Logterman goes on a winding run in midfield and is tripped 25 yards out. Moore’s free kick is blocked, while her follow up is easily held by Dyer.
8:13
Dyer looks shaky taking a cross, but the ball is cleared after the keeper spills it. Hooper surges forward at the other end, but Erica Campanelli shepherds her wide and her tame shot is off target.
8:09
Another Gaines free kick puts A& under pressure, but they deal with it well. The ball breaks to Gaines at the top of the box, but her shot is easily held. At the other end, Whitney Hooper sends a header wide of Pfenninger’s goal from a dangerous position, but the linesman flag spares her blushes, offside.
8:05
A great cross from Alisha Ortiz lands agonizingly in front of the streaking Logterman, five yards away from the A&M goal. Just out of reach.
8:03
Both sides return to the field, with Goodson taking her role atop of the Texas frontline, to the delight of the home crowd. And we’re underway again.
7:47
Halftime. About what everyone expected with two heavyweights matching up and an early lead in the Big 12 to play for. Goodson’s injury is the biggest story of an uneventful 45 minutes, and she has not reappeared after being helped to the locker room.
7:44
Half-time is just around the corner now, and the crowd at Myers is still in good voice. A&M is enjoying a spell of possession in the Texas half, but they don’t look capable of breaking down this experienced Texas defense
7:38
Texas gets as close as it has come all night to open the scoring, as Gilbeau beat her defender in the corner and delivered a cross that Lucy Keith somehow fails to put away. Dyer gratefully dives on the ball and clears the danger. A&M responds with two shots that bring Diana Pfenniger into action.
7:26
A sight most Texas fans don’t want to see, freshman sensation Courtney Goodson crumpled on the turf holding her right ankle in pain after a crunching tackle from Raven Tatum. She’s up now and helped off the field, right shoe off her foot.
7:22
The first yellow card leavs the reffere’s back pocket as Texas defender Jill Gilbeau is draged down in front of the A&M bench by Beth West. Gilbeau has been streaking down Texas’ right flank all night, giving the Longhorns some much needed width.
7:20
And the newly crowned Big 12 Ofensive players of the week delivers another beauty, but Moore’s stooping header goes over again.
7:19
A&M gets a call in its favour and its in a very good postion, 25 yards from the Texas goal, but sophmore Niki Arlitt bravely, if unknowingly, blocks the shot with her head. Texas marches back up the field to earn another corner.
7:16
The game is getting increasingly physical, but thankfully the ref is happy to let play go on and has called only two fouls so far, both on the Aggies for inexcusable pushes in midfield. Kasey Moore has been back to her defensive best, stepping in front of passes and dominating everything in the air as neither side can carve out a chance in the first 17 minutes.
7:05
A&M freshman forward Jennifer Kmezich has looked dangerous so far, turning Kasey Moore on one occassion with surprising ease. At the other end, the ‘Horns are moving the ball around on the ground, a nice change from their hopefull punts to start the game against Cal. The Longhorns get corners in quick succession, and Courtney Gaines’ delivery is causing all sorts of problems for the Aggies. Moore sends a looping header over the bar.
7:01
Senior goalkeeper Diana Pfenninger gives Texas an early scare when she clears a long ball into a charging A&M foward, but with the goal left open the ball rolls well wide.
7:00
The crowd breaks out in a back-and-forth of “Texas! Fight!” as players are introduced and take their position on the field. The Longhorns launch into an attack right away with Courtney Goodson forcing a throw in.
6:50
Texas players return to the field while Hook’em and Texas cheerleaders rile up the crowd. The ‘Horns are wearing their burnt orange top with white shorts and orange socks, while the Aggies take a full white kit on to the field. 10 minutes to go until kick-off.
6:47
More important then any conference race or school pride tonight will be the Lone Star Showdown point up for grabs. Senior Kasey Moore lamented the Longhorns’ loss last season in College Station, which gave the Aggies the point despite Texas winning two later postseason match ups.
6:40
The crowd is still filing in to Mike A. Myers Stadium 20 minutes before kick-off, where a near-record crowd is expected tonight. Just how much ACL has to say about that we’ll find out in a couple of hours, but for now, Texas vs. A&M is the big ticket on campus.
